brave little Iris

Iris gave us a good scare about a month ago. Most of you heard about her lump through email. We found a lump on her back, just to the right of her left scapula. It was about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. We took her to the pediatrician who immediately sent us to get an ultrasound. The radiologist still didn't know what it was so he called for an MRI. We had to wait a few days to go in for it, and those few days were hellish. I think John and I immediately entered a depressed state. The MRI process is not easy, either, for Iris had to be sedated. Almost immediately after the MRI was finished, the radiologist came upstairs to talk with us and he was happy and confident that it was just fatty tissue. Surgery was scheduled and Iris went under with general anesthesia on July 1st. She came out of it just fine. John and I got to see the lump that was removed - it looked like the color and texture of chicken fat, yellowy, smooth, tough. The biopsy results came back this week and everything is well. The lump is a lipofibromitosis, which is a benign connective tissue that is very fibrous. All of the doubts are gone and relief is in the air. Iris did remarkably well through all of the procedures. She has proven to be a lively, healthy child, and we are so thankful and so happy.
